What's in a Name
November 28, 2005
As of today, 'PicoNews' becomes 'PicoList'. Why the change?
It seems that the use of the term 'news' has been creating some
confusion about the nature of the service, largely because we associate
'news' with something prepared and presented to us by organizations
dedicated to creating and selling 'news' and editorial
opinion - and shoveling as much of it as possible in
our direction.
PicoList, on the other hand, is a mailing list. It has no
editorial bias and exercises no control over content, other than
the rejection of messages and sources that violate the PicoList
terms of use.
PicoList exists to facilitate the flow of information in a
defined geographical area. It's up to organizations operating within that
area to use it to provide subscribers with the information
they want, and subscribers to use the tools PicoList provides to
tune into the sources that are giving them the information about their
community and neighbourhoods that they consider to be important.
The core assumption of PicoList is simply that even in the age of global
communication and commerce, distance counts. You can't get everything
you want from someone close to you, but if you can, there are a host
of social and environmental benefits that depend on choosing near
over far.
If you agree, help us make this work by telling local organizations that you
want to hear from that they don't need your email address - they can send
you updates on PicoList.
Best of the holiday season to you and yours,
PicoList Administrator
