Why would I send messages to PicoList?
It's an effective way to cut through the flood of information most of us are exposed to in order to notify people in a specific area about an event or service that will mostly be of interest to those who live or work nearby.

How do I send to PicoList?
Once you're registered as a subscriber, you can register to send to PicoList. Log in with your email address and password, and click on 'Send a message'. You'll be asked to register as a sender, then you'll be able to send your message to PicoList subscribers.

What kind of news can I send?
PicoList items should be factual and concise and must be appropriate for all ages. That means, for example, no trade in alcohol, tobacco, firearms, sex or drugs. Religious or political polemics or proselytizing, aggressive advocacy or advertising, spam, rudeness and personal attacks won't be tolerated. Violation will result in termination of sender privileges. For a complete description of content rules and other terms and condition that apply to senders, review the terms of service.

So I can't send news about controversial issues?
There's nothing wrong with controversy, but PicoList isn't a forum for debate. So, for example, if you're upset about the noise in the park next door to you, you can send news about a meeting to deal with the issue, but it's not ok to expound on the problem through PicoList.

Is there a limit on the number of messages I can send?
Yes. PicoList is intended as a locally targetted service, which means that you'll generally be sending messages to a limited number of subscribers near a specific location.

top

How often can I send messages?
There's no specific restriction on how often you can send out messages, but it's important to keep in mind that subscribers have the option to block your email address, so you should be careful not to send repeated messages with similar content.

What does it mean to 'resend' a message?
If you elect to resend a message, the resent message won't be sent to subscribers who received the first message. You can use this feature to send messages that have the same purpose to different, but possibly overlapping, areas. If you resend the same message to the same area, people who subscribed after you sent the first message will receive it.

top

What is a 'message group'?
If resend a message, it's assigned a group number. If you resend a message from a particular group, it won't be received by any subscribers who already received any of the messages in the same group.

Can I register more than once?
You can only register one sender address for a specific purpose. You can register separately for different roles. For example, you can register an email address as a spokesperson for an organization and again for personal purposes. You can also register more email addresses for a single organization if these addresses are used for distinctly different purposes.

Is my registration information private?
As a PicoList sender, your registration information is available to PicoList subscribers. If someone has received a message from you, they will be able to contact query your registration information and send an email to your registration email address for one week after the message has been sent.

If post from my email address, won't I get spam?
You may get replies from PicoList subscribers who receive your email, but your email address won't appear on a public web page at any time, so the likelihood of getting junk mail as a result of posting is small.

What if I just don't want to expose my email address?
You might consider posting from an email address from one of the many free email providers (yahoo, hotmail, google, etc.). It's not uncommon for people to have an alternative account to be used for public purposes.
